Both of the above posters are wrong!!!! There are reasonble hotels right where you want them!

The Hotel Harrington is a budget hotel a block from Freedom Plaza and Pennsylvania Avenue. Three blocks to the mall and to the White House. One block from Metro. Rooms here start at under $100 a night. It's independent and not fancy, but clean, and comfortable.

The Red Roof Inn Chinatown is more of a standard motel, but nice, and on H street at 5th. It's only about 6 blocks from the Capitol, and the Mall, and right near the Gallery Place/Chinatown metro. It has rooms starting around $120.

If you stay out in the suburbs, you spend time and money commuting, and you can't just drop by your hotel in the middle of the day to drop puchases off or take a quick nap. People who stay in the suburbs also tend to miss out on the great nightlife and culture in the evenings!

Monuments and memorials, modern neighbourhoods, correct local flavour it's this that Washington, DC is; a location unlike every other; just like this website hotelbye . Washington it's your property away from home with free museums and America's entrance yard. Washington is recognized around the globe as a symbol of the United States. Here, the area you cannot skip is the Capitol. Capitol may be the seat of the House of Representatives and the Senate. The enormous dome, based on the dome of St. Peter's in Rome, stands apart especially other Washington buildings. Like Washington itself, the developing has developed through the years considering that the main part was created between 1793 and 1812. The final improvement, in 1958-62, increased the key façade where presidents take the oath. On another part, a marble terrace presents wonderful views within the mall and the city. The inner is resplendent with frescoes, reliefs, and paintings, particularly the rotunda under the good cast-iron dome with a threshold painting by Constantino Brumidi and enormous paintings of displays from American record on the walls.

Stephen is right - you are better off finding a place to stay that's more like a short subway ride away.

I'd suggest staying in Rosslyn, which is right across the Potomac from the District. It's on two subway (Metro) lines, so you can go south to the Arlington Cemetary, or east into the District and places like the Memorials and the Smithsonian.

There are three Marriott properties in Rosslyn, all within walking distance to the Metro. Sign up for Marriott's emails (it's free - http://www.marriott.com)/ and look for the weekly specials - often the Rosslyn hotels are included in these specials. You can get a $100 "bonus buck" certificate on ebay which is good for $100 off a two night stay at Marriott, making the room cost even less.

Rosslyn is safe, well traveled, and has restaurants and a few stores (like a CVS). I always stay there when I go to DC.

There is nothing in downtown that is a reasonable price.

Look to the suburbs for a hotel, and use Metro to visit downtown.
