Whitman's work breaks the boundaries of poetic form and is generally prose-like. He also used unusual images and symbols in his poetry, including rotting leaves, tufts of straw, and debris. He also openly wrote about death and sexuality, including prostitution

I was chatting with my wife's 16-year-old cousin at our wedding reception.. the girl whose English was quite good mentioned that she would like to study overseas as an exchange student. I asked for she wanted to go, and she answered, immediately, Sweden. I asked as she had any interest in studying in the United States. Her answer was an unequivocal, "No." I asked why and she replied, "because American people are not free." Baffled as my wife and her nephew if they had any idea what the girl was talking about. They didn't. Then I started the process of obtaining a visa for my wife to come to the United States and to live with me. Suddenly I discovered what bureaucratic hell and a lack of freedom truly is. My wife and I are separated by the gross inefficiency of the USCIS and the DHS. They have absolute power over us and can turn my wife's visa application on a simple whim. If this whim turns out to be negative, there is nothing that we can do about it except to go through the pounds and pounds of paperwork again and pay the hundreds of dollars in fees and still have no assurance that there will be another petty bureaucrat somewhere with another wild hair across his hind end will arbitrarily turned on the application on another whim. Now I understand. We are not free. We are victims of bureaucratic whim
