Miso vs. Tofu?

What's the difference between miso and tofu? They are both made from soy. I have a recipe which calls for miso. Can I use tofu instead?

miso is a fermented paste with salt

tofu is a bean curd, never fermented nor salted

    good alternative is to mix

    1/4 cup soft tofu

    ramen noodle seasoning packet

    1/2 tbsp soy sauce

I would then add parmesan cheese as it has cheesy taste slightly as it is fermented but this is up to you

Miso is more of a thick paste, whereas tofu is tmade by coagulating soy milk, and then pressing the resulting curds into blocks. No, you can't substitute them.

Miso paste would probably be your grocery store's asian or oriental isle.

I like to take extra firm tofu, press out the water and then marinate it in soy sauce, freshly grated ginger and fresh pressed/ chopped garlic. I add this to stir fry... carrots, red peppers, broccoli, snap peas (whatever other vegetables you might like stir fried) - start cooking the vegetables and then about half way through, add the marinated tofu, extra marinade and all. That along with some rice (I personally don't like the texture of brown rice, so I use white) - so good!
