There is no easy way to turn a ketone such as:
CH3CH2COCH2CH2CH3 into the corresponding acid or acid chloride
CH3CH2COOH (or Cl), CH3CH2CHCOOH (or Cl)
but with an aromatic ketone you can oxidize straight to the benzoic acid. The only problem is, you will eat any carbon you have in between the aromatic ring and the ketone as well:
for example,
PhCH2COCH3 + K2Cr2O7 (H+) -- Heat --> PhCOOH
then the PhCOOH can be turn into the acid chloride with thionyl chloride
PhCOOH + SOCl2 --> PhCOCl + HCl(g) + SO2(g)

Ketones are oxidized by strong oxidants e.g KMnO4
CH3CH2CH3COOH → CH3COOH + CH3CH2COOH
For example if you oxidize butanoic acid you would receive two others acids - methanoic and acetic acid

oxidise them under acidic conditions using an oxidising agent such as acidified potassium dichromate.

you need to do a reflux. add sodium dichromate and use quick fit aparatus to reflux it. careful though last time i did it it got to hot and explodid!
