What is the ideal temperature for a Betta?

I have a 5 gallon tank set up that i am planning to put a betta in. I have a heater I can use for it, but am a little concerned that a heater may have a hard time regulating such a small amount of water, and would hate to cook my fish. I see bettas all the time in tiny horrible little bowls which are defintily not heated. Is it okay to leave the tank unheated? Or would my betta be happier in a warmer environment, and if so, what is the ideal temperature.

The room my tank is in is on the warm side of room temperature.

Try and keep the temp around 77F(25C). That way they will still be fine if it goes a few degrees under or over.

I have a 25w heater for a 5gal tank I rear guppy fry in and it maintains the temp very well, even in an unheated room in winter. (room temp down to 50F)

Usually between 76-80F degrees--but more importantly, keep the temperature stable (don't fluctuate). Get a good submersible heater--the better ones have a thermostat built in that will shut off if the temp goes above set point and will flip on when the water temp drops below set point. Also, older bettas need more warmth (just like old people). Read the box to see what size they recommend--different heaters are more powerful then others. For our 5g tanks, we use 25w Visitherm Stealth heaters because they are very reliable and won't crack or burst when I forget to unplug them during water changes (duh) and I don't need to remember to plug them back in afterward (duh). I've had beautiful bettas get ill and die because I was too stupid to remember to turn the heater back on after cleaning. Now I just do the cleaning the heaters take care of themselves. Just make sure you test the heater for a couple days to make sure they work properly, there are always going to be duds no matter how good they usually are.

Yes, he will be so vibrant and active and have a healthy appetite in warm tropical water...

    78 -82

My betta is in a 4 gallon adn a 50 watt regulates it for me between 80 and 82.

If you can buy a 50 watt (50 watts are usually great for up to 5 gallons)....maybe up a watt. look on the back of the package, a 5 gallon is not at all too small to regulate water temp in.

try to set that temp to a nice 80 degree.

They really do flourish in 78 - 82 degrees <*)))><

I am glad you are asking about water temps and Bettas!

Most people overlook that and wonder why their Bettas are stressed, lethargic, pale or innactive.

I tell ya, go for the heater.

He will love it and you will love watching him!

    peace :)

They can live OK with water temps of 70 to 85F, so the exact temp is not critical, it just needs to be "warm". I would suggest that the middle of that range would be the ideal, between 75 and 80F. 77F is a good average that suits most tropical fish, and a betta will be perfectly happy at that. But exactly what number you choose isn't really important. Ian

The heater will be fine. Most modern heaters have thermostats fitted, when the temp. of the water is the same as the set temp. on the thermometer, the thermometer will cut off, turning back on when the water temp. drops.

Bettas need heaters, even if your room is warm. They keep the temp. consistent. When the temp. changes it will stress the fish, stressed fish=sick/dead fish

Bettas need the temp. around 77-80 Fahrenheit.
