Comic books are like short stories. Graphic novels are a lot longer -- just like regular novels. The stories in graphic novels are usually more complex than comics and they tend to be directed at an older audience.

Check out the Watchmen or Neil Gaiman's Sandman graphic novels.

a graphic novel can be a compilation of story arcs originally published as individual comic books, or a longer story original to the graphic novel format.

it's all about length. graphic novels are thicker, and usually have a spine, comic books are stapled together and usually only represent a small part of the overall story arc. but you can use the terms pretty interchangeably- no one is going to scold you for calling a graphic novel a comic book.
