IMO--For the money-- the best quality food is Canidae or Chicken soup for the dog lover.... I've been told that Kirklands (I believe from Costco) is a decent food at a good price.
Google the name and it will bring up a store locator

First of all anything you find at walmart or an grocery store is ....NOT A GOOD DOG FOOD! privately owned stores will carry the best foods, you don't want anything with meal or corn as one of the first 4 ingredients. I have fed my dogs holistic and organic for years. There is no reason that a dog should ever eat anything with food coloring, it does nothing for them except add crap into their diets. They can't see color anyway!!! Unfortunately if you want a good food you're going to have to spend a little extra money. When you look on the back of the bag you don't want anything with preservatives, some dog foods are meant to last on a shelf for almost a year. would you want to eat something like that? ewe no! good luck, do the research, that the most important thin. know what you're feeding you dog.

You'll get lots of different answers about food here, but the best food for your dog is one that meets her health and nutritional needs. Nobody can access those for your dog but you.
You can also check this website to see how different brands have been rated:

We give our shih tzu Blue Buffalo. Blue Buffalo Life Protection Formula (dry food) does not use animal by-products and their gluten-free recipes do not contain any artificial flavors, colors or preservatives. Their food also does not have corn, wheat or soy, which have been known to trigger allergies.
You can go to the website: http://www.bluebuff.com/ and read more about their products. You can also request a free sample (and a $3 coupon) so you can see if your dog is going to like it before you buy a larger bag.
Their treats and canned food were on the recall list so I don't recommend those.

the best quality dog foods are usually found at locally owned pet supply stores as opposed to chain stores like petsmart or wal-mart. look for foods that are made with human grade ingredients, such as foods made by innova or california naturals. foods of that quality were not effected by the pet food recalls of a couple of years ago.

This is too debatable. California Naturals is the best for pets with sensitive stomachs. And Blue Buffalo is a great brand.

Canidae, Wellness, Innova/EVO, Natural Balance, Solid Gold Barking at the Moon, Missing Link (EXCELLENT), Chicken Soup are all great brands... raw feeding is ideal. There are meat distributors who you can get great prices on human grade meats, organs, bones, etc from...
Ultimately read the label. If there is any of the following, don't buy:
Corn of any kind, wheat, soy, dairy, most any grain besides oats and rice... also, NO "by products"! :)

Look at the nutrition label, just like you would for your own food. Make sure the first ingredient, or the first two, are proteins. Try to stay away from corn as a first ingredient; it has no real nutritional value.
This is better for your pet and better for your wallet as well, as corn goes right through them, and you have to feed more!
