Why is it a tradition to play Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline" at Red Sox games?

Is that really true? It's a great song, but how does it relate to baseball?

Amy Tobey was the music director at Fenway Park (1998-2004), and started playing that when she worked there because she'd heard it at other sporting events. She played it when the Red Sox were ahead between the seventh and ninth inning. In 2002 when John Henry and his group bought the Red Sox, they made it the official song to be played during the 8th inning of every game.

What Elliot said is the exact reason! It is now a great tradition at the park and it is loads of fun to be there and experience it first hand!
