Schooling in Amsterdam?

Hi All,

I am Indian and moving to amsterdam in July. I have a son 3.5 years old and I do not which type of school is better for him. Shall I choose

1. international schools - What would be the average school fee? I check in few schools over internet they said it is around 8 thousand euros. THis is very expensive. What is the future for my son in netherland if he studies in this type of school?

2. Dutch speaking school - Where he could learn dutch (added advantage) I know it is not easy to learn could be difficult for my son for couple of years. But if I leave the country this would be of no use. What would be the fee structure?

ANy answers would be highly appreciated.

Regards,

Swaroop

If you know for sure that you are staying a short period of time in NL and returning home then practically this is the best option but indeed the fees for an international school are very expensive. Also if you think of his social interaction then friends from school may actually live a long way away

If you are staying for a couple of years of more as you say then I would send him to a Dutch school. He is still very young and very able to pick up a second language with little to no trouble at all. He will have the advantage of a second language, more integration with the country itself and also his school friends will live in the close vacinity. It will be a lot easier for him.

Also in the Dutch schools, English is taught at a very high standard (as you will find out when you come here and listen to the younger generation's standard of English) so if you do stay, he will learn this also

My husband works with with a lot of international people and e.g. one of them has a 4 year old, 12 year old and a 15 year old. They all joined Dutch schools and a year later are thriving, speaking fluent Dutch (and learning English at school as well) and enjoying a normal, happy social childhood

I don't teach in Amsterdam, but I do teach at an international school (in Asia). International schools are great because the students are exposed to a wide variety of cultures and experiences. Yes, they are expensive, but generally you are looking at really good schools with small classes and lots and lots of resources.

If you are planning to stay in Holland, learning Dutch is obviously a good thing, but if you are not planning to stay forever, learning English, the standard language in most international schools, is a better plan.

In general, international schools come in two models, the American model, and the UK one. it isn't a big deal now, since your son is a preschooler, but if you are going to be overseas a long time, you should think about this. Many American schools offer IB programs, which help their students get into European universities.

When looking at an International school, the better ones tend to be not-for-profit and connected to an embassy or the UN. This is not to say that there are not good for-profit schools out there, just that they are less common. You should also look at things like demographics, programs (are they an IB PYP school), school philosophy, etc.

International School preferred if you have a fat wallet.

Europe is an expensive place. Normally the goverment schools are free for the citizens as they are tax paying, check how it is for you. You will still be paying tax there so there could be an extension of it and government schools are good there.
