AOL, IE and Firefox often hang on me when I try to close them. Is there a quick way to shut them down without rebotting my computer?

once the computer hangs there's not much you can do only reboot the system..
one of the reasons you get hang up's is sort of memory. try closing down programs that are not in use.. from the task bar before you log on to the net... also clear all data, cookies and history every hour or so. that might help the situation also only use one default web browser..
AOL dump...IE 7 dump if you have it installed.... IE 6 only use when you have to. for windows updates..
download and install fire fox 3 releasing sometime in the near future if not already done so

First of all... your question is misleading.
You're not trying to shut down the internet!
You can't shut down the whole thing, anyway.
When you browser hangs up instead of closing, if you're in Windows, do CTL-ALT-DEL and you click on the task manager button. Select the browser so it's highlighted... then click at the bottom to END the program. Windows will then end the program... force it to close.
And you don't need to reboot.
The only other thing you can try that I can think of is right click on the bar across the top and select CLOSE.
