You not only need the wifi adapter that is already in your laptop, but you will need a cable or dsl internet account, the dsl or cable modem and a wireless router connected to the dsl or cable modem to use wireless in your home.

Vanessa said it well, but she failed to point out that laptops have an on/off switch to use to turn the wireless NIC off (to save power) when you don't need.it. Some models have a physical (hardware) switch on the side of the body of the laptop, and others have a software switch which you access through your Systray (lower right-hand corner of your screen, to the left of the little digital clock). You need to check the specs on your system to see which you've got.

Presuming that you already have an integrated wireless adapter. When you turn on your laptop...it will automatically detect wireless signals...all you nee to do is connect to a specific network
If it requires authentication...just ask the owner of the network for the network key then key it in...then open up a browser & you're IN!

for it to work you need to go to Start -> Control Panel -> Network and Internet Connections -> Network Connections. then look for one that says wireless and double click it. a window will pop up and then browse for the network labled with airport or so and it will say connecting to network. then your connected! but the airport might charge money to use the internet. to see start internet explorer, firefox, etc. and if it comes up with a page that says you need to pay then you need to pay but if not its FREE!!
