How can you tell if a restaurant or business is locally owned?

Buying locally not only supports the community, but the environment. I'm trying to find restaurants that are locally owned. These should not be confused with locally operated businesses such as chains or franchises. How would I go about finding out what businesses in my community are locally owned? And does it matter if the business is a franchise? Does the money go to the corporate headquarters of these businesses?

See if the business is listed on MANTA. It can tell you the owner's name and other information.

Does it matter if a business is a franchise? How do I answer this part of your question? Franchises are usually, but not always locally owned. But, a part of every dollar goes to the franchisor for product uniformity, employee training, and sales promotion.

If I had concerns, I’d ask the owner if they lived in your community. Restaurant owners put in many hours, so you should be able to talk with all of them. Also, look for wall plaques and awards displayed inside the establishment. Locally owned restaurants often donate to local service organizations. You’ll find the owner’s names - and the names of those charities. Do you respect the restaurant owner’s charitable donations? < - That's Important.

One of the best ways to find out the ownership of a business is check the business license. This is required ( most states ) to be on display and visible to the public. Also check with the city license office or tax collector. Most of this information is public record and can be found with web searches.

If a business is a franchise it may still be locally owned. A franchise agreement is a license to operate a certain business in a certain area. Most franchise owners are local people with a vested interest in the community. In addition the have the resources of a national chain to help support local projects. Many franchises encourage each franchisee to be active in community events as it is a great way to build goodwill.
