Female mosquito inserts her proboscis which is like a very small stiff needle into your skin and into a capillary. A VERY tiny amount of a anticoagulant is also there to keep it from plugging up. She then sucks up blood into her abdomen. That's why when you smack one it splats with blood.
That is also how diseases are spread...like dengue fever, malaria, West Nile, encephalitis...she basically flys from host to host, injecting her proboscis and infects animals and people with her infected needle.
The male does not 'bite' or suck blood.
Mosquitoes appear to be attracted to hosts via the carbon dioxide they emit (along with body heat). Some compounds can repel them, and apparently Avon "Skin So Soft" lotion works about the best as anything.

Many insects like ants and grasshoppers have a pair of mandables designed to chew food. Flies have modified their mandibles to allow them to drink liquid food. The two mandibles have joined together into a hollow straw. Butterflies have also adopted this configuration.
The mosquito's jaws are joined together into a long, stiff tube. The outer tips of its jaws end in sharp barbs. When the mosquito bites, the two barbs are worked back and forth. They then stab and slice into the skin. The insides of the mosquito's jaws form two sets of hollow tubes. It uses one set of tubes to pump saliva into the skin. The saliva contains enzymes which prevent blood from clotting. The other set of tubes are then used to suck liquid blood. Paracites such as Malaria live in the salivary glands of mosquitos and rely on them to infect their victims. Malaria kills more humans than all other diseases.
Mosquitos need blood to lay eggs. Blood is rich in protein and the female uses it to make her eggs. Male mosquitos don't produce eggs and feed on plant sap instead. Baby mosquitos live in the water and feed on algae.

The female mosquito needs blood for reproducing. They stick a straw-like needle into flesh along with a mild chemical so you don't feel it...most of the time.

They stick their probiscis (a long, sharp tube that goes into their mouth) into your skin. They then suck your blood.
Their main food source is animal blood, that is why they bite.
