What should you do when you accidently hit the wrong thumb button?

I know if you hit the star for a question by accident, you can hit it again and your star will come off. Why don't we have a similar capability for thumbs? I mean, they are more important than stars in some ways, because they add to the points of the best answer.

I hit a thumbs down on an answer by accident just now, when I meant to hit the answer just below. I couldn't think of anything to do execpt write the one with the good answer and apologize. Should be something better than that!

Update:

Several good answers here. I haven't tried the "back" thing, but I will next time there's an opportunity. I'm putting this to a vote.

Just vow to be more careful in the future. It's not like you can take them back.

If you REALLY feel bad about it, click onto the answerer's account and find a question where they already got "best answer." Then click "thumbs up" for them. That automatically gives them a bonus point since they're already best answer.

It annoys some people to get thumbs down but for many of us we ignore them.

I never look back.Thumbs up will give a best answer a further point. (max. 50 per question)

Only care about the thumbs up as for each one on a best answer you get an additional point. (max 50 per Q).

I agree with you. We should be able to take back a thumbs down. I've accidentally given a contact a thumbs down when I meant to give him a thumbs up. I ended up emailing him to apologize and he graciously accepted my apology. I still felt really bad, though. :(

When I do that, I email the question to my spouse, and ask my spouse to sign on and give a thumbs-up to counteract it! Then I email the person, if I think it is such that will hurt their feelings.

But, fixing it so that we can remove them would be great!

I had this happen just the other day with an answer I really liked. I wrote the person and apologized even though it makes no difference whatsoever in the world. i just thought it would be nice for the person to know someone appreciated the answer.

I usually apologize in my response if I answer the question, or if it is one of my contacts I sent the an email

I think it's commendable that you would be considerate enough to write the offended party and apologize...That speaks character,to me...

Folks often accidently, give me thumbs down on answers as well, on heated questions.....lol...

I email the person and apologize. I've done it twice - and have each time gotten a gracious response from the answerer.
