pulling an all nighter?
ok, i am finally pulling an all nighter , I have never gone without sleep in 24 hours, but got tons of home work I have been postponing and need to get it done asap. What kind of short term effects will I have ? just so that I can be ready.
btw I am 19.
my eyes go red even if i lose 2-3 hours of sleep , i am sure it will be scary red tomorrow.

In my opinion, pulling all-nighters is recommended for things that don't require very much mind work. As the night goes on, you will become more sleepy and less aware and unable to concentrate and process information. Then tomorrow, you will go through the day in the same shape: irritable, sleepy, weak, unable to concentrate, apathetic about everything but getting home to snuggle into your bed.
As far as long term effects, it will disrupt your sleep routine for a few days. But you should be back to normal in a maximum of two weeks since that is when the sleep cycle is renewed.

You will be less effective than if you did some homework and then rested. Then do more, and sleep. You need to have proper food and sleep to function, or it will be a waste. And then you need to look at why you procrastinated to get into this position. Do you crave stress? Do you work better on a deadline? This is important to know so you will make adjustments in your life. But don't try to cram everything into 24 hours unless you can get it done, and then rest and take care of your body. And then don't do this again. It isn't worth it, and you are not learning as you should...you are only going through the motions to turn homework in.

You may hear weird voices and feel panicky.
Try to lay off the caffeine as much as possible as this will make your heart race and you'll feel sorta jumpy. Try tea instead, it's more of a soothing awakeness.
I'm not saying don't have the coffee. But freshmen to all nighters tend to just down tons of coffee at the start and are completely wiped by mid all nighter. Pace yaself baby! This is and endurance race. Drink it as needed not in anticipation. And try to eat some snickers and such, to keep up your blood sugar. Forgetting to eat is another rookie mistake (Peanut butter jelly sandwiches provide a well needed sugar flood and sustained energy source).
Oh and whatever you do, don't lay down!!! "Just for a minute, I'll just lay down for a few...snoooooozeeeee!" If you feel like laying down, go outside for some fresh air instead.
Good luck rookster!

If it helps, i'm pulling an allnighter as you are right now. But this is my second night, due to my biology partner screwing me over. So that means a lot of time with no sleep. I recommend eating breakfast right before you start your day and going to classes. I drink orange juice and eat a bunch of carbs, it helps with the energy. The orange juice will help you keep a sharp mind. But you can expect getting pissed off real easily, obviously tired, decrease of patience, and not so good decision making. Hope that helps

You'll get sleepy and then wake up again and the cycle will happen a few times. You'll be ok though, you'll probably really start crashing tomorrow afternoon but try to stay up till your regular bed time. If not you'll have trouble sleeping for days. Also, you may be still tired when you wake up but it'll go away later in the day.

You may feel tired, to the point of even falling asleep against your will. It may also hinder your ability to do the work at peek performance. I recommend not laying down at all. Also try to do whatever gets you going in the morning. I know energy drinks work for some but I don't use them or constitute them.
Most of it is a experience of it's own to be had.

well i pull all nighter about 3x a month
but i would say your eye might get tired...drink coffee tea or soda...
but remember if you do this, you will have to stay up the whole day untill the next night or your sleeping schedule will me mess up untill you break the cycle

Whenever I've done this, I do okay until around 3 the following afternoon. Then I feel like a zombie.

Just yesterday I helped someone here who completely messed up his circadian rhythms and couldn't re-establish a normal sleeping pattern: don't let it happen to you! See procrastination, and study tips, in sections 26, and 13, at http://www.ezy-build.net.nz/~shaneris
