When did math and science education become important in the U.S.?
When I was going to school everything I learned was reading based. We learned the basics of math and science and that was it. Now it seems, that because we are lagging behind other countries in this area that this is now a major focus. Can anyone tell me around when the change happend and what was the turning point?

The change happened when the Russians beat us into space with their launch of Sputnik in 1957. Based on fears that the Russians would be able to both spy on us and attack us from above, the President called for a renewed focus on math and science as our patriotic duty (my paraphrase).
