hooking a laptop to a TV?
i only have a dvd player on my laptop, and i was wondering if there was some kind of cord or something i can use to hook my laptop to my tv so i can watch movies on it rather than the laptop.
if there are any cords or anything i would greatly appreciate if you could tell me what they are called/ how to do it.

what kind of output/input does your tv and laptop have in common. Most of the time I think is S-Video.

Not sure about video (I'm using s-vid and DVI-HDMI), but for audio you can buy a male 3.5 mm headphone to red/white RCA composite cable. just plug the headphone end into the headphone jack on your computer and the other ends into the corresponding red/white inputs on your TV. These cables cost likes $5 and under aat any electronics store. It will also let you play music from an iPod or other mp3 player over a stereo (no need to buy a $75 iPod dock with crappy speakers).

In order to connect your laptop to your TV, you need a couple different outputs from your laptop. You need a S-Video output from your laptop, using a S-video cable and a TV with a S-video connection. If this is true, consult your TV manual on how to activate your s-video connection on your tv and you need to activate the s-video connection on your laptop as well. Generally you use the function button and a monitor button inline to activate it.
Another way is if your laptop happens to have audio/video out connections (red, white, yellow) and connect them to your "video in" on the back of your tv if it has it...
Hope this helps and works for you!

It depends on your tv. If your tv is new model and it has to support the link. There is the blue cord that is used to connect the monitor to the system unit in desktop computers. you could buy that. But you have to see if your tv supports it.
Good Luck!

There are any number of cables that could be of use to you....but you need to figure out what the capabilities are for your laptop...
Basically if your computer is not built to send an Audio...& Video signal OUT...from your machine...than no cable on earth with help you...
Figure out the specs for your computer...and what it's output capabilities are...Perhaps if you post your computer model # and information....folks here could help...

What rickyc25 said is correct, just let us know the notebook model you have and that should be all we need to know. I bet there is a way to hook it, let us also know the TV you have. Does it have HDMI, VGA, or S video?
