How can I properly position my hands and arms so I don't hurt myself too much while typing?

I recently started using a cd-rom so I can learn to type properly, so I can pick up speed and type like a pro, as I want to be a various type of writer someday. Plus, I just want to type faster in general. But I also want to reduce my risk of carpal tunnel syndrome as well while I'm at it.

Thanks to all answers.

they have these pads you put in front of your keyboard. They support your wrist , arms and hand and relaxed them some so you can type for long period of time. they work really well. Rule of thumb for every hour on the keyboard you need 5 min break from the computer. And look away from the monitor from time to time that will help your eyes out alot and make sure you in a well lit area not a dark room where you straining your eyes. Just keep your hands and wrist relax and supported on that pad i told you about and you should be fine. good luck on writing.

Let your hands hover over the keys. Do not rest your palms or wrists on the desk or key board pad. Set up straight close to the key board. Your elbows should be even or just at the front of your sides. This has seemed to work for me. When ever I get lazy and rest my palms or wrists on the desk or keyboard. My wrists fatigue much quicker. And with your hands hovering freely over the key board it is easier to type faster.

Sweetie I have learned to just take a break about every 20 minutes, and give my arms a a break, But don't snack like I do and gain a few extra pounds. LOL

At present I use GS Typing Tutor, and I find it very well including a tutorial of introducing how to correctly type and how to properly posit hands and arms. It's quite good. You may download it for a try

i have seen those little wrist supports in store that you can place in front of your keypad and rest your wrisy upon while typing to take the strain off of your wrists. i know you can get them at walmart.

basically it boils down to not resting your wrists while typing or using the mouse. this makes you move your arm to move your hand around over the keyboard or to move the mouse as opposed to twisting your wrists to move your fingers or the mouse.

I hunt and peck like a chicken. Is that ergonomic?

Have you ever tried one of those funky, bent keyboards? Do they even work?
