It is quite inexpensive and easy to get an external USB enclosure for a laptop. Just put the hard drive in it, plug it in to the new computers USB port, and get your files. You will also have a nice external backup drive that way.

You could either connect the laptop with the smashed screen to a regular desktop monitor and transfer everything to pendrive or cdr/dvdr or you could take the drive out of the machine and put it into a usb laptop drive caddy (check whether the drive is ide/pata or sata before buying!) then connecting it to your working computer and transfer everything across.
