What is the meaning of the reference to David Copperfield in the Catcher in the Rye?

David Copperfield is the story of a young man’s adventures on his journey from an unhappy and impoverished childhood to the discovery of his vocation as a successful novelist.

Holden is alluding to this character from the Dicken's novel by the same name. He wants to let his reader know that he is the opposite of David Copperfield.
