Why is my parakeet pulling out his feathers? Is he sick, is he going to die?
My parakeet for the past week has been plucking his feathers out. Is this a sign of death? And he is not very old, he is maybe 7 months old. Answers would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you all for the speedy and very well detailed responses. Thank you.

Birds pulling out their feathers is sometimes a sign of stress or boredom. However, since parakeets are very social creatures, boredom could result in more stress. How big is his cage? Does he/she have a lot of toys to play with? They usually love mirrors next to their cage.

Birds of all kinds do this.. Generally it is because they are bored and not being stimulated enough. It could be that the owner used to spend alot of time with him then got busy and isn't able to anymore or that the cage is to small. Also he may not have enough toys or he is lonely for companionship and another bird may help.. sometimes they get new feathers for a new season and remove the old ones.. But if the bird is constantly pulling out feathers and there are bald spots that is a sign of stress or that he is bored and lonely..

You are either not spending enough time with the bird, or not giving it enough toys. Plucking is a sign of bordum and you must take action on it. If it persists for too long, it will become a normal behavior for the birf (not something you want). You may even want to get the bird another parakeet if you don't have enought time to spend with it.

We have two of them and seems periodically they just do that. Now they have never pulled themselves bald, but some days there are feathers all over the floor that need to be vacumned up. Other days, or weeks go by and there are none. I want to think it is a stress issue, although I can't imagine what they have to worry about! Hope this helps.

He could be molting. He will not die, though. He may be plucking if there is something undesirable in his life- a bad placement of the cage, depression, boredom, etc.. Birds are like people, they feel emotions and will hurt do things such as plucking to stop boredom or other things.

Are you sure he isn't just molting? If that's not the case, birds often pull out their feathers because of boredom, stress, or loneliness. Is he being stimulated enough? Is he socialized? Is he kept in a desireable environment?

When birds pull out their feathers, it's a sign that they're going crazy or they're sick. I think you should let her out every now and then :)

It is just preening (cleaning) its feathers. But if it is almost completely naked then bring it to a vet.
