Is it right to allow only Mumbai IPL team to use the word Indians in its name?

Does it mean that other teams are not for and of Indians?

Update:

But, obviously, you call American "Indians" to distinguish them from actual Indians of Asia....do you then mean that Mumbai "Indians" are different from Other Indians????

The team management could have actually thought twice before naming themselves INDIANS. It may help especially with the recent chaos that was seen in Mumbai over regionalism. Yet, somehow the name does not sound catchy enough. If at all, they call themselves Indians, they should have been the only IPL team to have 100% Indians, well they are not. The team is good, they could have named themselves Mumbai Marauders or Mumbai Juggernauts. As of now the team looks good but the name looks like a bad joke.

When people dont care what clothes the cheeerleaders are wearing, they dont care about how IPL is making an indian stand against an indian, they dont care that players only care about money so why should anyone care about the mumbai team using the word indian. Infact many who are in support of IPL dont really know what the word INDIAN really means

Nothing wrong in it... What you call the Indians in America... ?American Indians... Isn't it? So, the Mumbai living Indians are Mumbai Indians... Obviously Mumbai is a part of India.. But the Mumbai team players are from various countries. So collectively we called them as Mumbai Indians... Seems nothing wrong in it...

It is unfair, i already thought about it. I am in Canada right now, and they have a ice hockey league in which every state team has their own name as IPL have; Montreal team's name is Canadian. But i think it is not right.

But Indian has many meaning so i think its not a big issue.

No, they must not use that word.

All teams are part of India and hence this must have been avoided. They must have used a regional name that suits there culture rather than the word Mumbai Indians.

I had this thought for a very long time in my mind.

if one franchisee can name his team after his brand of liquor and if two other franchisees are called 'kings' there was nothing stopping any of the other 7 franchiesees from choosing a name of their liking. if ambani chose indian and the non Indian cricketers are okay calling themselves "Indians" what's anyone's problems. also the uniform is in the blue colour that is similar to what national team wears - i see no harm in the name - as william shakespeare said - "what's in a name?"

I dont think any body should raise any question about it. It was the mumbai team which has selected this name. other teams have selected names of their own choice. why it should be objectionable to any body else.

I dont like it either specially when the commentators call them Only "Indians" as short form

  • 1 decade ago

I think this is wrong. First of all, all the cricketers around the world are coming for IPL. So either all the team names should contain India or non of these.

I have created my own bolg for IPL jus see if you can get any additional Info. And post comments if you like or dislike:
