Try re-installing the drivers for the drive.
The easiest way to do this is to check Windows Update for the drivers. Open Internet Explorer and go to Tools -> Windows Update. Perform a manual update and check the Hardware section on the left menu. If there are updated drivers for your drive, you should see them there.
The other way to do this is to right click on My Computer and go to Properties. Then go to the Hardware tab. Click on Device Manager. Under the DVD/CD-ROM Drives tree node, find your DVD drive and right click and select Uninstall. This will uninstall the drivers for the drive. Then refresh your hardware list. If the plug and play installation does not automatically start, find the device in the list (now marked by a ? icon) and right click to install the drivers. Allow the computer to connect to Windows Update (via the checkbox option) in order to get the most recent drivers.
If the drive isn't listed initially, try installing drivers for all devices that show up as unknown or a ? in the device manager list.
If after installing drivers the drive still doesn't work, you have a hardware problem that can't be fixed. You'll need a new drive (repair costs exceed the cost of a new drive in most cases).

It is possible that the driver is lost for your dvd rom... you can search online the driver for the rom. for example i will put in: Acer aspire 5050 driver dvd... you can add more words and then look through the sites for the correct one. If you do not get the right one or run out of patience, then give me your pc make and if you are using vista/ xp/ whatever, then i will try and find it for you. remember to if you are going to ask me to help to give model as-well, like i have aspire 5050
