I am not worried about the UAE's future at all. All your questions make sense, but you have to face them from a different view (tourists, residents or citizens). Dubai is and will be a hotspot regarding tourism. Dubai is a city of the superlatives. Everything has to be higher, bigger and more expensive. When ever Dubai runs out of oil it have to focus on tourism and that what Dubai is prepared for.
Abu Dhabi is doing some catching up. Also when it is said officially that oil will last for the following 30 years.
Do not worry, changes will not take place at once. Changes will give people (residends) time to get used to it and adopt these changes. Just a couple years ago the Hard Rock Caffee was the tallest building in Dubai. Look at Dubai now.
The only thing I am worried about is the inflation rate. That's it.
Otherwise I have full confidence in the rulers of the UAE and their advisors.
Some of your mentioned points are social related and not easy to solve because of so many different nationalities living in the UAE. For example: I personaly do not think that the Metro will solve much of the traffic problem. No offense please, but no Emirati will join the Metro with tons of Indians and Pakistanis. Especially no women. That is not racist, that's a fact.
But - breathing space will be always enough and you never will suffocate:))
Take care and thanks for this interesting question.

I am not scared. There are a lot of permanent traffic gridlocks already. I cannot understand why they build buildings that can take the population of Kuwait but not build larger roads to go with it.
Dubai is becoming a more developed country and it looks like it needs to have something better than the world by building all new projects and plans. The industry commercially will continue to grow; mostly surrounding properties.
I do not think there will literally be less breathing place unless everyone started living in Dubai. There are tons of empty apartments 20 minutes away from the Burj Al Arab, near the beach.
I don't think the glamour/sheen will come off. All the projects they build are at the top end of contemporary, new and something extraordinary.
So far Dubai is the main place in the UAE where they are building lots of projects. Soon they will turn to the other cities like Ajman to start building there.

I am a bit concerned about the wastage of water and I hope people who use it do their best not to waste it as the water table will have less over time. Research shows us this.Plus the rainfall is little each year.
I hope car parking woes will change too as that is becoming a difficulty situation also.
Having said that I think the UAE has a bright future evident from the people around the world coming to the UAE to live and open businesses. It is a world class international business hub.
I certainly agree with H regarding the metro system too for many, many reasons.

I can only agree with everything Fairies said , I don't see it any different. As for Superdog I wonder where he gets some of his ideas , no such things in reality (tribal wars?? what is this the 16th century, or have you been watching too many Lawrence of Arabia type movies). And as for oil I used to work in that field rest assured oil will NOT run out for UAE as a whole in 25 years , maybe Dubai fields will dry up but as for the whole countries there are oil reserves that have not been tapped yet. And if you think about it , it is not that much different as all the petrol sold in Dubai petrol pumps is imported any way , only the government of Dubai will have to find a way to substitute 6% of ts GDP that oil-income used to bring. There won't be a war between Iran & Saudi Arabia , but possibly US could pressure GCC countries to support US military intervention in Iran , which I believe unlikely as it goes against economic interests of GCC countries. Iran itself will not attack but might support subversive groups like it did in Bahrain & Yemen. Then when these groups call upon Iran for the rescue , it will wash out its hands as usual. This is how things work in this part of the world.

Have no fear the scientists arround the world are on the thresh hold of moving away from oil it's only a matter of time . There was a recent report that I think it was Israeli scientists are working on a project to convert sea water to gas for cars of the future. The UAE cannot not survive without petro $$$$$$$$ everything will eventually come to a slow down even the traffic .

Based on my judgement, i think the future of UAE will really improve since the government transformed Dubai from an oil booming city state to a free economic zone city, a business hub, and of course tourism. Since Dubai is growing to a big city, i'm sure it will be a splendid city. The economy will also get richer and stronger. And regarding on my contact "h", i also agree with her regarding about the social situation with Indians and Pakistanis. You do not have to worry about fresh air cause Dubai itself is a green earth friendly city...
