am i rude?? (native new yorkers plz answer)?

ok so im rushing out of the grand central station trying to get to 40th st because im like 2 minutes away from being late to work and there they are..a whole bus load of those fanny pack wearing, camera ready tourist taking up the whole damn sidewalk (a busy sidewalk is not a place to stand and stare at buildings) so im trying to get through the pack and people are shoving cameras in my face asking me to take a pic of their entire family, like i dont have anywhere to go, like my mission in life is to stop what ever im doing and take pics... i said no as politely as possible but they insisted so i told them to hire a damn photographer and i walked away so as im walking away i hear them talk about how rude i am, but im not on vaction..i actually live here and i have things to do, if people were more considerate everthing would be great...but nooo they want to block up sidewalks and stand in the middle of busy subway stairs and interupt your everyday routine and call YOU rude.

    Rude, no.

    Flustered at the time.

    Bitter now, perhaps.

But no, not rude, though I see how a tourist who is too absorbed in their New York City experience to consider that other people aren't on vacation, forgetting the pace of New Yorkers and predisposed to thinking New Yorkers are rude anyway may take it as such. I'm sure any other time, if you had a minute, you would have politely obliged. There's a lot of people on the streets of New York, when someone doesn't want to stop to take your picture, just ask the next person.

    NOPE..you were certainly not rude.

You did politely tell the tourists that you didn't want to take their picture. Had you NOT done that and came off with that "hire a damn photographer" first, then that would have been rude.

And to that, this is a good time to tell tourists...politely....that sure, you can take in all of the sights of NYC, this is a great city to do that. However because it is a busy city and people that live here are just moving and rushing to get to wherever they have to go, that if you are going to stop and take pictures, to move to the curb of the sidewalk or somewhere that isn't in the way of pedestrian traffic. And if you ask a stranger on the street to take your picture and they say no, don't take it as a person being rude....just ask someone else. Someone WILL take your picture...though if you ask the wrong person, they'll take your camera too!

If anything you were giving them their true New York experience....

I have to walk through Times Square every day to get to work, so I have little patience for tourists blocking the streets gawking up at the big shiny lights. I've done that sort of thing plenty of times (shove by the huge group blocking an entire sidewalk or brazingly bypass the tourist staring confusingly at the subway entrance.

Being rude to tourists is quite frankly every New Yorker's duty.

Well, to them you were rude. But, to the situation you were not rude. In the future I suggest that you just say, " excuse me, I'm trying to get to work and I'm running late ". Say it over and over if you have to. People always look at things from their own perspective, whether it is in traffic on the highway or walking down the sidewalk. The tourists being on vacation are just bumbling along worried about seeing sites and getting their pictures taken. While you are trying to just do you everyday thing and get to work, live your daily life. Hang in there, at least the tourists spend some money, pay some taxes.......and there is always winter when most of them stay home. ( lol...lol )

I won't get best answer for saying this but yes you were rude. Had you left out the "Hire a damn photographer part" I would've agreed with your actions (and yes, I'm a native New Yorker). New Yorkers always claim to be polite yet they have attitude problems. Even when I ride the subway people are ready to fight over seats. New Yorkers have always hated tourists and they're so antisocial.

I'm not a native new yorker, but I do think that tourist make it bad for the people who live there regularly. I've noticed tourist are the mean people bumping into you and not paying attention not New Yorkers! Sorry the rest of America's just lame, so when we come there all we can do is just get in the way!

No, I dont think so .I dont live in NYC but if someone declined my offer, I would not ask a second time, let alone insist you take it. Your actions are kind of funny actually. I would like to have seen thier faces! By the way, I love New York!

No you are not being rude. If they want to come to NY and visit they should take a class on NY etiquette. When taking pictures, you make the ugly person in charge of the camera, its that simple. LOL

Nope, that aint rude, in fact thats EXACTLY what i would have done.

Its okay to ask a favour from someone, but it's extremely uncouth to REPEATEDLY ask dem that favour when they said they're already late for work. We Newyorkers got big sh!t poppin and there isnt any time to be standin around in a CROWDED street during rush-hour takin pics.

i have to agree with AJ on this one!

in my book, there's NEVER any excuse to say anything rude like that, even when they pressed your buttons. why? these tourists really didn't know any better, and, hopefully you do. so you have to be the better person here. if there's any rudeness at all, leave it on the other person. one never loses anything by being kind, even if you have to be insistent. the best clue you could have given these tourists is to have continued walking. they would have found the next person soon enough who would have had the time to take their pictures...
