It may be difficult to get a job actually working with animals if you don't have a college degree or experience. One way to get experience is by volunteering. If a job becomes open you will have an advantage. Volunteering will give you an opportunity to see how you like working with them then you can focus your job search. If no animal jobs are available you can get a job somewhere else and volunteer on the weekends for the experience.
You don't say which island you are on. If by Hawaii you mean the Big Island, I don't know what is available but they may have similar organizations as are on Oahu. If you are on Oahu you can volunteer at the Hawaiian Humane Society exercising animals, grooming them, and helping with other chores. Other than a pet store, the Humane Society would be the only place to help find homes for animals:

You can also volunteer at the Honolulu Zoo and assist the keepers with birds, reptiles, primates, and large mammals. These are not tame animals so you will not have "hands-on" experience with them like you would with pets.

The Waikiki Aquarium has marine mammals plus fish and the tide pool animals:

I have volunteered at the Humane Society & found it to be very gratifiying. They do have some paid staff. But I don't think there are a lot of the real cool jobs that you are looking for out there.

All of the above are great suggestions. In addition:
How about dolphin quest?? I had a friend who used to work there and loved it! She got to assist in the delivery of a new baby dolphin! The downside is that the pay is very low intially and sometimes just to get in the door you have to volunteer (so I have heard).
