The discoloration is from the salty tear discharge coming from the eyes. It happens because the dogs are so small and close to the ground that debris gets in the eyes easily. The discharge is extra tear production trying to clear the eyes. You can clean the fur with warm water and mild dog shampoo on a washcloth. You could use a quality eyewash and an eye lubricant if you want just to keep the eyes clear of debris. However, it seems your pet's tears are doing the job and all you need to do is clean off the discharge. I would say monitor your dog's eyes throughout the day and I figure about 2-3 times a day you might find discharge and need to wipe it off.

Its no big deal as long as its just the normal looking 'eye boogers' as people like to call them. If it starts to stink or the eye looks infected like a cold is in it then take the dog to the vet.

    Chihuahua Eye Discharge

It is common for Chi eyes to water however the brown is caused by dyes in the food you're feeding them. A good food (we've had good luck with Solid Gold's Wee Bit) should get rid of the color of discharge. To initially get the stains off (after washing with warm water & baby shampoo maybe?) I'd contact a groomer. They have stain remover but I've never had to buy any so I'm not sure what to suggest. Good luck!

It's something many dogs get in either both or one eye. It's easier to see in light colored dogs, but as long as the dog is healthy it's nothing to worry about. Just use a damp washcloth and wipe the eyes gently. Don't use soaps or shampoos which could get into the eye and irritate the dog.

If you are worried it might be something else or if the eye appears swollen, red or infected see a vet immediately.

  • A lot of small dogs with large eyes have this problem. I'd use a wet, warm washcloth and try to clean it off. If that doesn't work, maybe a trip to the groomers is in call. Hopefully after they get the tough stuff off, you can start cleaning with the washcloth and stop it from coming back. I hope I helped, good luck solving your problem.

You can get rid of it with warm water and a wash cloth. It is caused from...becuae their eyes are so big and set a little bit further out they dry very easily and due to this they tear more and the crust is dried up tears.

Its just eye boogers. Try to remove them with luke-warm water and a towel. Its not something dangerous to his health. It just bothers them.

try a wash cloth and warm water. if you have to use a tiny bit of soap and keep another wet wash cloth handy to wipe it away.
