I would not rule it out - he was a great player, and the heart a soul of the late 90s dynasty.
I say retire 21 - and put 44 back in circulation - because Reggie was a mercenary BUM. . .

No, he won't. O'Neil was a good player, but in order to get your number retired you've got to be better than great. We're talking no doubt about it, first ballot Hall of Fame type great. He just isn't that good.

If he does, then we might as well just move on to 3 digit numbers now. He was FAR from a great player. He was very popular in NY, but, really, he's not Hall of Fame material and his number doesn't need to be retired. For that matter, in case it comes up, # 6 shouldn't be, either. Torre wasn't that good, either.

When you consider the Yankees who HAVE had their numbers retired, it should be apparent that O'Neil doesn't measure up.
