Is there a risk of humans catching mange from a dog?
My sons lurcher has caught mange. Although she's an outside dog, she was indoors yesterday. Now I can't stop itching. Is it just 'all in my mind' or can humans be affected by it too?

YES!!! There are two types of mange and one you can catch. See a doctor you can get a cream Mange is a form of mites and everyone people and animals can be affected by them. When it happened to me everyone told me it was in my head but then my mother in law started itching to after she sat with our pup for the weekend . She went to the doc and guess what it wasn't in my head and we got a cream to rub on it. Also none of the mange dips worked on our dog a guy at the feed and supply store told us to give it (the dog) a dab of horse wormer and that cured it right up. Sarcoptic mange is the one you can catch it's a type of scabies actually.
Ummm about what sweetbonniie said it's not only inbetween fingers backs of knees etc. I had it on my stomach by my belly button cause thats where the puppy would lay. He was tiny and fit right on my lower abdomen and thats where I got it. It did spread to other places though. My elbows were the worst.

Depending on what kind of mange , yes humans can catch it! There is a type of mange called demadectic ( not sure about spelling) that is actually not contagious it just a skin allergy! I would get the dog to a vet immediately before it spreads more and get the poor thing on some antibiotics. Maybe you should reconsider making that dog live outside all the time.. and if you cant finding the pup a new home where he can be inside there are too many hazards for a dog to live outside its whole life this being one of them!!

There is a type of mange that is similar to scabies and causes intense itching in humans but the good news
is the mites won't reproduce on humans so when they finally die you wont get more unless you are around the dog. There are several types of mange and most aren't contagious to humans. You need to determine if she has mange and what type before having her treated, there are a lot of things that could make you itch that have nothing to do with your dog.

Your cat is at risk, take precautions to separate them. This is not something you want your cat to get. It is called something else when humans get it, but we can also catch it. I posted a link for you. Edit - I posted a couple other links for you. I found these tidbits specifically discussing what you are looking for: Although cats are less likely to get the other types of mange than dogs, it is still important to maintain strict hygiene in the cat’s living area. Besides the recommended medical treatment, make sure to disinfect bedding and surrounding objects to prevent parasite reinfestation. Unfortunately, humans get mange, too. A mange mite can infest a human, but the mite cannot live on them as a host, unlike the scabies mite. Mange is a parasitic skin disease caused by microscopic mites that causes you to itch constantly. Sarcoptic mange, also known as scabies, and notoedric mange are two types of mange that humans can catch. They will itch and irritate your skin for a couple of weeks, eventually, dying off. If you want to treat yourself to kill the mites immediately, using a scabies treatment would relieve you of the itch quickly. Good luck to you. I have seen a cat that had mange and it was in some sorry shape. I wish your critters well!

Yes, humans can get scabies. You probably don't have it. If I see a flea or people are talking about head lice, I get itchy just thinking about it.
Scabies isn't like sarcoptic mange; it IS sarcoptic mange.
From the animal health channel: Scabies, also known as sarcoptic mange, is sudden, localized, very intense itching (pruritis) caused by Sarcoptes mites. The mite burrows into the skin to lay its eggs. After hatching, the nymphs and larvae feed on the skin. Intense pruritis is caused by the burrowing and hypersensitivity (allergic) reaction to the secretions of the mites. Scabies is highly contagious among dogs and cats and can be transmitted to humans.
Pumpkin, Demodectic mange is NOT an allergy! It is a mite.

Please go to this site to learn about mange, there are different types of mange and it's impossible to diagnose from the info you gave us. Go to www.canismajor. com/dog/mange1 (sorry the link will not work I'm having trouble with that, but type it in your address bar)
To just answer your question yes, Sarcoptic mange is zoonotic (contagious to humans) it is caused by the scabies mite. However, your dog may have a different type of mange, and either way needs to be seen by a vet

I agree with April. There are different types of mange. I had dogs with mange and never caught it UNTIL an abandoned pup showed up at my home. She had no loss of hair and no odor, so I couldnt figure out what was going on. I broke out in a rash where I held her and then my daughter did the same. It really itched intensly after a warm shower or when I went to bed at night. I went to the doctor and he gave me a cortisone shot! Nothing happened. I took the pup to the vet where she got a skin scraping along with shots and a checkup since we'd not found her owner and decided to keep her. The vet informed me she had mange. Sarcoptic mange and then I pulled up my shirt and said, "hey doc, what is this?" LMAO..He said "scabies" from your dogs mites!! OMG I was so embarrassed. He told me to have my doc write me a prescription for lindane. Funny the vet had to tell the human doc what to do!! We had to dip the pup and coat ourselves in this nasty smelling medicine from neck down at night. Happy ending, the pup (now a senior citizen) and us were cured!!
PS..Now that I know how untolerable that itching is......please have pity for your dog and take him to the vet!

There is a type of mange that can be transmitted to humans - my brother caught it from a puppy he adopted. See the vet about the dog. The vet will take skin scrapings from the dog and will be able to tell you which one it is. He will then advise you whether you need to see your doc. It is highly unlikely that you have caught anything as it's quite rare for it to transfer to humans. It is cleared up by bathing in a special bath additive that your doc can prescribe.

You can catch mange, ring NHS Direct and ask their advice. You can google for their phone number.
They'll need to know what type it is, your sons vet will have told him when he treated the dog.
