How can I deal with a neighbor who plays loud music all day?

I live on a quiet street, and none of the neighbors are loud except the one living next door to me, so I'm the only neighbor who is subjected to their noise. They play loud, heavy rap music for hours and hours, and I can hear it in most of my house. It is really annoying. Right now it's been going on for over 4-1/2 hours. They've done other inconsiderate things like hammering at 3 AM, which woke me up. Walking around their front lawn at 11 PM talking on the cell phone like it's the middle of the day.

I don't know how to deal with this situation. I don't know these neighbors, but there's about 5 or 6 living there, so I'm outnumbered. If I were to go next door and ask them to turn down the music, they may just turn it up higher because they feel no one is going to ask them to lower their music or only turn it down for one day only.

I love all my other neighbors, but I'm starting to hate the ones next door.

Update:

Unfortunately, the noise ordinances in my town don't seem to be enforced well by the police. The police don't want to be bothered by noise complaints.

Update 2:

This family is renting the house (3 kids and about 3 adults) right next door to me. They just moved in over a month ago, and immediately the inconsiderateness started. I feel like putting my house up for sale.

I feel for you. These folks are what sociologists commonly refer to as being members of the genus "Ignoramia Moronica." OK, I made that up but it felt good. IGNORANT MORONS. Not you, them.

Find out who owns the house. You may be able to do this by going to the town hall and searching the title records; I think its for the public record. Also, if you have any realtor friends, they may be able to search the tax records if they have the address of the house to find out who owns it.

Next, call the owner. If you can't get a phone number then write him/her. Give the owner the opportunity to handle the situation. Tell the owner that you will go to the police if he doesn't do something. They never want to hear that. If the situation doesn't improve then go to the police. Document everything and always get the police report. Then, go to the owner of the house with these.

A couple of other things. I can guarantee you are not the only person who is disturbed by these imbeciles. There are others who can hear them and others who can see them. I would try to find out who by talking to some of your other neighbors. There's power and safety in numbers. And don't listen to anyone who tells you "Before 10pm people can do whatever they want, blah, blah, etc." Egregious noise is unacceptable at ANY time of day. Make sure the owner of the house doesn't say who complained; unless he/she is also a genetic mutant then they will just say "I've gotten complaints." That can be anyone. The cops do that automatically.

Lastly, do not approach these people directly. It does no good; people like the ones I'm fairly sure you're dealing with can never be reasoned with. If they could, they wouldn't be this inconsiderate. I also wouldn't let on that it disturbed me. I'd be polite to them if I had to have contact and would not allow my emotions and rage to belie my outward appearance.

Best of luck to you. I'll send some good wishes your way.

If you own your home send a legal cease and desist notice letter to the owner of that property with information like how you are recording day and night every time they do it with decibel measurments and that if they don't stop this you will take legal action against them. Call Police and get card of officer and copies of all reports, keep all these records on internet site so there is no risk of theft and take the landlord to court for all costs assiciated with this situation: Lost work, mental emotional duress (cost of counseling and your time hourly) etc...if you really want to put teeth into it rent a room of your house to a friend and have them hear it and move out because of it...you now have lost rent $$$$$ It all adds up very fast and they will see the $$$$ bill adding up...money talks and BS walks (or gets ignored). Empower yourself and get all the neighbors you can to sign on for a quiet neighborhood.

Oh, and the woosygirl who said put on "ear muffs" OMG!!! What is she on??? Housewife medications??? LOL

Every state and city has a noise ordiance law. What you need to do is go and knock on the door and ask them politely if they can turn down the music, because it is disturbing you. If they do not turn it down, then you have every right to call your non-emergency police. The police will ask you if you've asked them to turn down the music, you can then say you did. The police will then go out to their home and ask them to turn down the music. If they don't they will give them a citation. Everytime they turn the music up, contact your non-emergency police. Afterwards they will get tired of the citations and they will stop turning the music up. Too many citation and the police will haul their behinds into court. I'm sure they will not want that.

    I hope this helps.

If they are renters, find out the name of the property owner. We had this situation years ago. The tenants just blew us off, so we called the owner and made a quiet complaint.

When nothing happened we called the owner again and carefully explained the situation. We also explained that if we were disturbed again, that we would call him right when it was happening--no matter what time it was, because if we were going to be disturbed then he was going to be disturbed. This was before caller ID and answering machines.

The next time we were awoken out of a sound sleep at 1:00 AM, we called him. He was extremely unhappy. Things got better and then they got worse, so..each time it happened, we called him again. He cussed us out, hung up on us--the whole time, tho..he was having to deal with the fact that we meant what we said and as long as his tenants didn't stop, we wouldn't stop. He finally kicked them out....and we left him alone--because his next tenants were no trouble.

I had the same problem except it was at night. I purchased a semi-detached with great neighbours...then they moved out and a real estate agent purchased it...he didn't care who he rented it to. After 3 months of the base thump, and a lack of sleep I called their landlord at 3:00am, state my name and tell him I'm up because of ur tenants, I thought u should be up too. It worked. 20mins later he's out front in his Caddy watching . 6 people would live there Mon-Fri and 30 on the weekend. They would sleep during the day.

    Dealing With A Noisy Neighbor

I"m in the same boat...I happen to just get lucky enough to have the one set of bad neighbours on my block...every day same thing music through my wall as I live in a townhome..they are known to police and when they show up they are aggressive with the police as well....they also have a known drug and violence history with police...good luck with it because I know how hard it is, just be thankful you are not like them

Speak to your local council. There will be noise restrictions.

Explain that the police wont do anything. If they dont help, then ring whoever is the next above your local police in your area & explain your situation. It would also help (as stated above) to find out who they lease from. You do have your rights.

99% of citys have a noise ordinece. You can contact your local authoritys to file a complaint. Done it myself tons of times in different places.

Just call the cops....They will put a stop to this, well you say they won't stop this, then I suggest you get all the neighbors around your neighborhood who are annoyed by this, and throw them out,by collecting sgnatures of all of them and taking them to the county....I hope things get better for you.....:)
