is baltimore a good place to live?

Me and my boyfriend are thinking of moving to baltimore to establish residency before we apply to grad schools in maryland. I've wanted to live in a metropolis area and found that baltimore is the largest city in maryland.

anyone have suggestions on what neighborhoods are good for a young couple to live in?

I want to be a food scientist and he wants to be an english teacher in addition to his freelance writing if that needs to be factored in.

Any advice before we start making plans is appreciated.

nope!! as far as baltimore city..It's dirty and ugly. I hate going down town, like by the ball park. I've lived around the baltimore area all my life. Try areas in baltimore county, not city. canton and fells point are mega expensive to live..great night life..they are pretty and near the water..I live 30 mins away in Carroll County..you're still very close to everything in the city, but the crime rate is MUCH less...but in the city - I'd NEVER live there. you could also try owings mills, it's still got the public transportation and the tons of people like the city, but it's classier..

I visited there once and hated it.

Other than the "safe" area by the harbor, it was scary. I did not feel safe, it was dirty, and the people were rude. Luckily I was only there on business and was able to leave in two days. I haven't been back. Unless you like things very urban and a little crazy then rethink your move to Baltimore. Live outside of Baltimore at least.

Baltimore has good areas to live in, such as Roland park area and john hopkins area. Even Downtown still has some good areas such as in or around canton, fells point area. Of course u have crime and city life of other city's. You also have good chooses outside of The baltimore region such as Owings mills, White Marsh, Catonsville, Pikesville. All of those areas are close to downtown and only a short travel. I have lived in Baltimore all my life. And I have been to other major city's. But Baltimore feels like home. Other city's are just good to visit.

It's terrible. Don't move here. I grew up here and I hate it. The biggest problem with this place is the people, mainly the black and the white people. They are the main two races that are always causing the trouble here. The Asians, Hispanics, Indians, etc are very respectful and more civilized. Even the successful black and white people act very ignorant. Its a racist comment but that is what you are going to experience if you come here. I am a black person myself and hate the black and white people that live here. Most of the time they are the ones driving like maniacs on the roads (illegal lane changes, tailgating, 80mph driving, etc), popping wheelys on dirt bikes in the middle of the streets, acting loud and ghetto, having a bunch of kids, welfare, etc. It's like nobody does anything productive here with their lives. There are also many successful people in certain areas but most of them aren't from here and relocated from other places. I usually always can tell.
