Speaker and Microphone problem?

For some reason today when I was making internet calls on various chat programs, my calls started dropping then saying that my microphone and speakers were being used by anoher program. Problem is, I only had one program open at the time, the one I was tryin to dial out on. I haven't had this problem before, and virus scan (AVG and adaware both) turned up nothing. Any ideas as to what can cause this? I also rebooted my comp

Update:

It's a brand new headset, so I doubt it's that.

And I didnt use them at the same time so no it's not that. And it works for a little while, just disconnects and then says that after I reboot. Works for like 3 minutes.

Do you have Real Player installed? Sometimes that has been known to be using audio resources needed. Often people have so many programs starting up with windows Startup and running in the background and never know it. Perhaps you have a program that is running in the background and you do not know it.

Now I only know how to check for these startup programs in Windows XP, you would have to research if you are using another OS. You find them by going to start, and then opening up the Run box. Type in msconfig and then choose the Startup tab. Now, this is very important, never just start unchecking things if you do not know what you are doing. You have to look them up in a Startup list to see if it is safe to do so. Of course things like your antivirus, firewall, and spyware protections with shields (real time) you will want to keep enabled with startup.

A good rule of thumb for msconfig startup is, if in doubt do not uncheck, so do your research.

Also it is also best to go into the preferences or options of the programs themselves and uncheck starting with windows startup. If you do not do this some programs will put themselves back into startup programs everytime you use the application.

OK here is a very informative page to read on the above issue: http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.php

And here are are some Startup List/libraries where you can look up the items in msconfig startup.

Well I hope narrowing down your startup programs and also making sure Real Player isn't interfering will help with your voice issues, it probably will improve your computer performance anyways. Again be sure to look up the startup items in the startup lists before unchecking them. You can also always go back in and check the boxes again later.

Of course also keep up with your windows updates and you can run more scans as well. There are online scanners such as Housecall Trend Micro and Panda Active Scan. If money is not a problem I would recommend getting Webroot Spy Sweeper. I use it myself and the real time protection against spyware/adware is great. I would not pay more for the version that has antivirus as well included since it is not as highly rated as the spyware scanner part.

Free spyware scanners are ok to use as a backup but if they do not have real time protection (shields) cannot protect you. Windows Defender and Spyware Terminator are the only 2 free ones that I know of that have real time protection. But they do not equal the protection of Spy Sweeper.

Here is a link to some good free utilities if you cannot afford to purchase the software to protect you: www.techsupportalert.com/best_46_free_utilities.htm

You should run more than one spyware scanner especially if you are not using a commercial product but you only want shields enabled in one of them.
