Survey question about the trucking business?
I was thinking of starting my own trucking business and thought the first thing I would do is go get a new peterbilt. Does this sound like a good start? Did I say this was a trucking business?

Step1 Write a complete business plan including what type of trucking company you are starting. The most common is a company that offers hauling or moving items for other companies.
Step2 Figure out where the start up money is going to come from. Do you have savings? Do you need a loan? This is the single most important step in starting a new business. You must also plan for operating expenses for the first three months.
Step3 Get all the appropriate business licenses and permits. These include Fuel Tax Reporting, USDOT numbers, 2290's, IRP tags, MC numbers and IFTA decals. Get the required insurance that you will need to operate your specific type of business.
Step4 Build relationships and start networking for clients. This should include cold calling, attending conferences and creating a great marketing plan.
Step5 Hire extremely qualified truck drivers. You may want to consider hiring owner-operators as this will cut down on your cost by not having to buy a fleet. Do extensive background checks on your drivers before hiring them. There will be nothing more detrimental to a new trucking business than a bad accident or any kind of incident with an unprofessional driver.

My husband is a truck driver...First thing you have to consider is the cost of the truck...then the insurance on that, then the cost of the trailer, and the cost of the 1 million dollar freight insurance policy, plus the fuel it will take to operate it! Then you have to put money away each month for break downs and tires. BTW new tires are anywhere from $350 patched to $500 new. I think it's great if you have the patience, money, and freight to keep yourself in business!! Good Luck!!
To the above post about a KW...the brand new KW's tend to break down very quickly after buying them. Peterbuilts are very well built, they run great, and they also pull heavy freight well!!

Get the customers FIRST. Then you can figure out what type of truck you will need. The trucking business is not about the truck. Its about getting the freight to put on the truck and make money .

I wouldn't buy anything until you figure out what customers you will have. Depending on what you end up hauling and how far will determine the type of truck you need. Also I would recommend buying used if just starting off.

My brother in law has quite a lucrative business. Check him out at MVT.com (Mesilla Valley). He has one on Las Cruces New Mexic and El Paso, Texas. He also had a truck driving school (don't know where)

I had lots of luck driving Peter......wait a minute. Is this a trick question? I would recommend mounting guns on the front of it and robbing diesel stations.
If you buy a new truck, I hope the dealership give you an extended warranty and an unlimited supply of KY because you're going to get screwed on gas prices. :)

You may want to take another look at fuel prices before you start a trucking business.
