Adding stud to bathroom wall?

I have gutted a bathroom in the shower area and cut back the drywall so the cement board and tiles will fit but there is no stud behind the edge of the drywall now. I have cut some studs the length I need but the wall is offset and there is about 1 1/2" behind the existing studs and the drywall to the opposite kitchen wall. I have shimmed behind the stud and will predrill and scew to sillplate. Should I put blocking in between since it doesn't go all the way to the ceiling? There is about 2" between the stud I put in and the one next to it. I do NOT want to cut out any more drywall since my cement board is 3' wide and that will be my tiled area.

Update:

The new stud doesn't go all the way to the top because I didn't cut out the drywall all the way to the ceiling and 2 studs together won't make up the difference

What you can do, which is fairly easy, is to screw a block to the existing stud which will act as a top plate for the new stud. You may need to toenail or toescrew it, then nail or screw through the end of the new stud. Hope this helps.

I don't understand why your new stud doesn't go all the way to the top.You could cut another stud to the right length. In fact you could cut 2 of them. Then youcan use one as a spacer by screwing it to the existing stud and then screw your new stud to that one. That should bring you to the edge of your drywall or at least close enough. That is if i've understood your problem.

It sounds as if you need to tie the original studwork to the new with a timber packer cut to size, and. suggest you use screw fixing as these can eaisily by altered if required You ought to contain the edge of your cement board with horizontal nogins which again coud be screwed. I hope I have interpreted the problem correctly. Good luck
