I do alot of home remodeling to my house by myself. Lots of books and reading and practice. I have started installing ceiling fans for people at work and plan to do more things once I retire in 1 1/2 years. I am a jack of all trades and a master at some. I love to get new power tools and I do for Christmas and my birthday. Even though I do all these things I am still a woman! I play piano and guitar. I taught ballet, tap and jazz. I also took karate with my kids.

  • Who in San Antonio,Tx had busted pipes today?

I was working in my shop outside and heard this loud noise! And YES a busted water fixture. I ran and turned off the water. Had to go to home depot and get a galvanized plug for a galvanized T that hooked up to a pvc pipe. Cut the pvc pipe off and will deal with that later. Not what I wanted to do on my day off.

  • What is the maximum span for double 2x12?

16'3" double 2x12 header with plywood in between. What is the maximum span that this can go on a truss roof system? It runs perpendicular to the ceiling joists and into a 3' wall for the air return supported by 2 jack studs and a king stud to ceiling joist. Inside the air return the header is supported on the end and again at 36" and of course at the other end. Is this enough support to have a 13' opening?

  • Getting new shower doors to glide properly?

I installed kohler frameless shower doors and I can't get one of the doors to glide. I checked the inside of the track and it was rough in some places so I smoothed it out with steel wool. I put a little white grease on the rollers and checked the door for plumb. The other one rolls well. This is the outside one and it makes it difficult to get into the shower.

  • AC relay switch bad?

I have an old ArcoAire central ac/heater unit in my attic and the fan(blower)relay is bad. The outside unit was replaced a couple of years ago. I cannot find another relay for it. It is 5 prong(3 on one side and 2 on the other)24V 50/60HZ Essex # 91 102006 31831. I have jumped it to get the blower going and tested the capacitor. The capacitor is good. It is blowing now but won't shut off when the ac reaches the temp on the thermostat or when I turn the ac off. HELP!!!

  • Adding stud to bathroom wall?

I have gutted a bathroom in the shower area and cut back the drywall so the cement board and tiles will fit but there is no stud behind the edge of the drywall now. I have cut some studs the length I need but the wall is offset and there is about 1 1/2" behind the existing studs and the drywall to the opposite kitchen wall. I have shimmed behind the stud and will predrill and scew to sillplate. Should I put blocking in between since it doesn't go all the way to the ceiling? There is about 2" between the stud I put in and the one next to it. I do NOT want to cut out any more drywall since my cement board is 3' wide and that will be my tiled area.

  • Vapor barrier for shower remodel?

I have gutted the bathroom tub area to the studs and have a 32X60 Swanstone retrofit shower floor to install. The largest wall is an exterior wall and I can see the 15lb felt. I will be insulating all 3 walls with paper faced insulation. My question is how far down do I apply the felt and do I need to cut slashes in the insulation since that is a vapor barrier also? The instructions for the swanstone shower floor show the cement board behind the lip edge of the shower base then thinset and tiles to bring it even with the edge.
