Why is it that every time I see 'LOL' in a question or answer I find myself grimacing?

I am never sure if it mean 'laugh out loud' or 'lots of love '.

Are there any shortened versions of sentences that wind you up !!!

Update:

Fair point Alley cat ....I do use 'ha ha!!'.

I can see how it could be read as sarcastic ..which I am not.

LOL has meant "laugh out loud" since pretty much the advent of the internet (I was using it back in 1993...). You need to realise that back in the mists of time (on dial-up) on-line time cost money, so LOL was literally cheaper than typing "That was very funny!". You get my point.

The only thing that really winds me up is when people type on their computer in the same way they'd type on their mobile phone.

    u no wht i mn?

LOL - Laugh out loud? Then what is a better way to show the recipient that you find his/her question humorous?

I use it all the time....'Haha' can be taken as sarcasm....

    What do you use???

I don't mind lol although I've never used it. I go for the old-fashioned "haha" or "hehe". I can't stand the other ones like rofl or lmao. They p!ss me off!
