Would you dock a litter of labradoodles tails?

It is not the fashion to dock labradoobles tails but I like the look of docked tails. Poodles have docked tails. So why not dock labroodles tails too.

Poodles have docked tails because it is in their breed standard.

Early generation labradoodles don't have a breed standard and they are half labrador (or at least part labrador) and labs don't have docked tails.

If there is not a breed standard reason OR hunting need reason I find it cruel to cut off a perfectly good part of a dog's body. Obviously the pup is young and doesn't remember, but what other than aesthetic preference would be a good reason to do so?

Australian Labradoodles DO have a loose breed standard and tails are not to be docked.

Finally, MOST people like the fan tail of the labradoodle--it is part of its beauty and charm and part of what people like about the look as a whole. I think it would be a turn-off to buyers if YOU have a litter and dock them all.

    I wouldn't have a litter of labradoodles.

I wouldn't dock their tails. And I ABSOLUTELY would never dock a dog's tail because it was "the fashion."

Ther are ONLY two reasons a dog's tail should be docked. First is if that dog needs it to be, for its work. It's why tails were docked on all of the terriers who went to ground, when they worked. Now that most of them do not, there is no reason to do it - even if it is breed standard. The only dogs who need to adhere to "breed standard" are those who will be shown. And most of us don't have show dogs. (Show dogs, being the second reason.)

Recap: I'd only dock a dog's tail if it were likely to be an actual show-ring or working dog.

    So, no, I wouldn't.

The best time to dock their tails and remove dew claws is the day after they are born..But you have up untill they are 3 days old...If the pups are born at night call the vet the morning she is done giving birth..It makes itmuch easier on them if it is done within the first 24 hrs... When i breed cockers it cost about $200-$300 for a litter of 6 pups to have both done(tails docked and dew claws removed..But it all depends on the vet you go to..Some are cheaper and some are more expensive.... Red Dog I just read your reply..Mandont do that to pups..It takes up to 3 weeks for the tail to fall of..Why dont you stick it on you finger...I used them to castrate bulls and yes they use them on lambs tails but it take any where between 1 to 3 weeks for tais because of the bones.... I hope that helpedand good luck..

I've seen poodle mixes with docked tails and they look good. I wouldn't have it done personally, but if you choose to I would have the docking done almost immediately after birth (in the first 10-14 days) to make sure that the wound heals easily and properly. I also wouldn't try to do it yourself, unless you've had success doing it before.

Why not? Because it's cruel. Only show dogs need their tails docked. It's a painful process, and not a neccesary procedure. You're paying money just to hurt a dog with no benefit because you like the way it looks.

[PS- Yay for a thumbs down on my opinion...?]

no because labradoodles look like curly labs and labs have long tails so if you docked the tail you would be changing the overall look of the dogs and it would look a little silly when they grew up. and if you are planning on selling them you might have a harder time because people might not like the look but if you are keeping them all, do what ever you want but it might look silly. and p.s i lovee labradoodles ♥

Ignore the "Bully Breeds Rule" the one with no pic...cause the are a clone to a real one with a pictue...

Dont dock mutts tails!!! that might HURT!!!

  • 1 decade ago

There is no reason to dock the tails of mutts- they aren't working dogs- there's no breed standard. Best to leave well enough alone.

BTW: If you like the look of the POODLE, then why not a POODLE instead of an overpriced mutt?

  • I like big waggy tails. How would you like it if someone cut off part of your butt?!?!?!?! It's cruel to dock their tails.
