Study Abroad in Japan?

I am planning to study abroad in japan In 2 years, I already know the school, and the housing situation, but I am unsure of what I will need to do food wise (how expensive is it, and what kind of options are there for vegans? (people who don't eat meat or animal products))

Eating out will be insanely difficult for you. Most Japanese dishes contain meat and or dairy. Vegetarian dishes are vegetarian for the most part, but in some cases contain fish or meat stock.

I can suggest Indian restaurants in Japan since they understand what vegetarian and vegan is.

Since you are vegan, it will be best to cook for yourself most of the time. Which will ease your food hunt and your wallet!

mainland. In Okinawa the locals really hate the americans, and the american base. SO if you go to Okinawa and your white (even if not american) everyone will assume you are. And no one will want to be your friend or talk to you. Also in Okinawa all the americans live on the military base, so there is no real place to get to meet them. In mainland Japan the people are generally a bit more open. More people you can get to know, plus you could always visit okinawa for a weekend if you really want. You could visit anywhere in asia from mainland japan, its just way more convenient.

If you cannot eat meat or fish, your main option of eating out will be noodles, like spaghetti, udon, soba, somen, ramen. Noodles other than spaghetti are all Japanese ones.

If you want to take vegetables or fruits, you should buy them at supermarket and cook for yourself.

  • there aren't many vegan restaurants. there are some vegetarian but those are far and few also.

you're best option is to cook for yourself. but fruits and vegetables are expensive. almost as expensive as meat. grains and rice are no cheaper too.

Almost all the soup of Japanese noodles contains fish or meat extractives.
