What is the pronunciation of the British surname "Sumer"?

Note the one "m" in this name.

Is it pronounced like the season "summer" with a short "u" or like the country "Sumer" with a long "u"?

This questions applies to the British family name only.

Update:

This is *possibly* a corruption of the surname Sumner; but most sources connect it with Summer or Somer and their meaning by way of the Middle English "Sumer" and Saxon "Sumor".

My question does not concern the origin of the word -- other than to specify that it is the English British surname that I am asking about.

If you know a British family with this surname -- then how they pronounce it would be very helpful.

Are you sure its not "Sumner" with an "n" I recognise that as an English surname but not "Sumer".

"Sumer" is the name of an ancient kingdom in the Near East

"Sumner" is pronounced as its spelt with a short "u" and a short "e" with only a hint of the "r" sound

on the situations those surnames needed to be recorded, spelling in neither us of a have been standardized. people assigned to checklist such names on census comments, the two in England and the U. S., have been often marginally knowledgeable, and various individuals did no longer comprehend the thank you to spell their names, besides. in many situations, they depended on phonetics to wager on the spelling. because of the fact the English language has long undergone various substantial vowel shifts, the deciphering of a popularity into alphabetic characters will inevitably substitute. This situation isn't particular to British surnames: i've got have been given Dutch and Silesian lines that have used 5 - 6 spellings till now they settled on a generic interior the 18th or nineteenth Centuries, or maybe then the names often get corrupted. Spelling is incredibly new, coming long after the invention of the printing press. it remains notably no longer elementary for English audio gadget, and spelling is often considered the susceptible spot for the language. purely be happy English dumped gender and rigid grammar, and be satisfied which you will hint the names of your ancestors back, regardless of the spelling conventions of the term.
