Can companies do credit checks even though you haven't applied for credit?

I have been paying for goods with a local company as I go along. I have never requested any credit or filled in applications, but it looks like they may have done some kind of search. I don't run my own business, so it was a personal check.

Update:

No, I haven't been asked to sign anything for release of details.

Section 604 of the Fair Credit Reporting Act lists the only permissible purposes for pulling someone's credit report. If it's not on the list, then someone broke the law. http://www.ftc.gov/os/statutes/031224fcra.pdf

Did you sign a promissory note? If you did, it entitles them to check your credit in some states. Credit reports are not only for credit. They are also the basis to find out if you are financially responsible.
