Strange you should ask.
I'm American and my two American cousins BOTH married canadians in the last year.
My cousin Lo married a Canadian man in Canada 15 months ago and is still waiting on her Canadian papers.
My cousin Jay married a Canadian woman here in the U.S. 8 months ago and she is still waiting on her U.S. papers.
Mind you, they all have skilled trades they work in and it shouldnt be a problem.
So the way I see it? Not only is it legal in both countries, but it takes FOREVER either way.

Can I ask...why is the US strict? I ask because my fiance is Canadian and I'm American. We are starting the plans for our wedding in 8/09 here in the US. Is there something we need to know about us getting married here?

Yes, you can. There is much more freedom of opportunities in Canada than in the USA.

You can get married any where but in order for the marriage to be recognized in the US i believe you need to bring proof like the marriage certificate/ license and present it to the city, county, state that you live in. =D I hope this helps
I think it gets more complicated when it comes to same sex marriages.... but that's another issue all together only New York recognizes that.
