Do you find this Cell Phone Joke amusing ?
Several men are in the locker room of a golf club. A cell phone on a bench rings and a man picks up the phone and begins to talk.
MAN: "Hello."
WOMAN: "Honey, it's me. Are you at the club?"
MAN: "Yes"
WOMAN: "I am at the mall now and found this beautiful leather coat. It's only $1,000. Is it OK if I buy it?"
MAN: "Sure, ...go ahead if you like it."
WOMAN: "I also stopped by the Mercedes dealership and saw the new 2008 models. I saw one I really liked."
MAN: "How much?"
WOMAN: "$60,000"
MAN: "OK, but for that price I want it with all the options."
WOMAN: "Great! Oh, and one more thing...the house we wanted last year is back on the market. They're asking $950,000."
MAN: "Well, then go ahead and give them an offer, but just offer $900,000."
WOMAN: "OK. I'll see you later! I love you!
MAN: "Bye, I love you, too."

No, airplane mode is not silent mode. In silent mode the phone is expected to work but not make noise (ring, key tones, notification tones) while on Airplane mode the phone does not allow any of the radios to work (i.e. it behaves as if no SIM card is available) thus allowing you to use the PDA side of a phone even in the airplane, where otherwise the use of the phone is prohibited due to fear of radio interference. My advice is to never use the Airplane profile and when in the airplane ask the flight attendants whether the use of the phone in that mode is safe. As for the rest of your long story (I have not read it all) I have few words for you: read the user's manual, a tree was killed to have that printed so the least you can do is read it once.
