I've never golfed before, would I be ok just setting up a tee time and giving it a shot?

My apartment complex has a golf course that I can go play golf at really cheap. I've never played before (unless you count wii golf) so I'm worried if I just show up and start hitting balls around I'm going to break a bunch of rules and make all the other players mad. I was thinking about going when it wasn't busy then I just need to hit the balls into the hole right?

Update:

Be the ball. Nanananana nanananana...

I did say I was going to go when I knew it wasn't busy. And it's just the golf course in my apartment complex, not Pebble Beach.

HECK YEA!! i don't think anything is wrong with going and trying something new. if you wear argyle socks and capris pants you will probably do better....if you are worried about golf snobs getting pissed at you, mini golf is a fun alternative. especially the courses with a storybook theme...you should still wear the socks and pants but add a nice hat and probably a flask or two. leave the golf buggy at home for this adventure though.

    HAPPY SWINGIN!!

To start with, just go straight to the green and putt.

It is less obvious when you make mistakes and so less embarrassing.

There is a big advantage to this.

When you do start swinging at the tee, other players you are with won't expect too much from you, and then you kill them on the green - sweet revenge.

PUTTING: start putting from 3 feet to the hole - when you get more ins than misses, go to 5 feet.

then when you putt from 20 to 30 feet away, you are not aiming to get into the hole ... all you want is to get about 3 feet away and you know you are likely to get it in next shot.

If you get pretty good, other golfers would notice you and give you good tips for swinging.

(the hard thing about long hits it that you want the ball to go straight, but the club is going in an arc or circle - that makes it easy to make mistakes and hit the ball onto the next fairway - other golfers don't like balls hitting them for some strange reason. Get some tips and practice before going onto the first tee)

The easiest way to learn golf like a pro is by following "The Simple Golf Swing" program. It's primarily a 31 page eBook that teaches golfers how to make solid contact with the ball, how to avoid hitting fat, how to avoid slicing, how get more power, accuracy, and consistency in your swing. Consistency being the number 1 golf skill.

You not only get the eBook though, you also receive a ton of extra material including video, lessons on putting, driving, chipping, sand play etc. Here is their official site: http://www.golfswingguru.net/

For your pleasure and others, please don't do it.

Golf is a fairly time-consuming game, and when you don't know how to play (which is true of everyone before they practice), it only adds a ton of time to the round. I've never seen a complete newbie enjoy a round of golf when they've never hit a golf ball before.

I recently played a round with a very new player, and a player who had never tried golf at all before. It was very frustrating for me and my partner, as it took us more than 3 hours to play nine holes (it should take between 1 1/2 and 2 1/4 hours to play nine holes).

It will also be very frustrating for you, and many people get very nervous when people are watching them and they can't perform well.

The best way for you to enjoy yourself and be courteous to others is to practice some before you go. Getting a few basic lessons from a local golf professional will also be a great way to begin well and get started with good habits. Then, you will develop a swing that is at least somewhat consistent, and you will lose fewer balls, be less frustrated on course, and cause less of a slow-down for the other players. Also, the website www.About.com has an area of the site where you can learn about golf. Knowing the rules of golf before playing will help a lot. I've found this site to be a great source for learning. Also, check out www.TheGolfChannel.com. They have all sorts of video clips and articles for instruction. Pay particular attention to the short game tips, as that's where you will spend most of your time.

Please, please, get into the game. It's a wonderful, fun, enjoyable, rewarding game. But taking a few preparatory steps first will make a world of difference.

NEVER!!! Before you ever venture on the course make sure you know something about the game, the etiquette you require and the well being of those who enjoy the game and play by the rules. To go out without any knowledge will only aggregate others. Take some lessons. Learn to hit a ball decently. Then , if the course is empty go to an adjacent hole , hit some shots and practice chipping and putting.

Source(s): Learn to hit the shots which require minimum swinging of the clubs. As you become comfortable with the short shots then increase the distances by gradually taking longer swings.

It would not be a good idea. Get out to the practice range first and hit a couple buckets of balls with someone who knows the game. Then find at least one other player before you make a tee time and hit the course.

Once on the course, be courteous. If you see you are holding up a group behind you, wait on the next tee box and invite them to go ahead of you (its called "playing thru"). If you do that, you'll always be welcome on the course no matter what your skill level.

Eeek! Go get some lessons first. This game is a whole lot more difficult than you think. At least go to the driving range and hit a few (hundred) balls and talk to someone about golf etiquette.

No - you won't have much fun, and other around you won't either. Golf takes some time to learn (like maybe a year) so you need to take a few lessons, practice at a driving range so you can hit the ball, learn the rules and etiquette of the game and then you could try it.

You should be fine but maybe head to the driving range and hit a couple buckets of balls before you head to the first tee? Hint: for the first time playing you are going to hit some really bad shots and maybe even miss the ball a time or 2. Don't get discouraged!!! Its a frustrating game but in the end result it will be your love!

just my 2 cents, have fun ; )
