Technically, it's illegal to book 5 people in one hotel room in New York. However, there are several hotels that allow it. (I myself am traveling in a party of 5 to NYC next week!)
We are staying at the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Tribeca. The room has 2 double beds and a sofa, we're paying around $270 per night including taxes and fees and stuff.
Good luck!

Have you tried Priceline or HotWire? Lots of times you can get good deals on hotel rooms and if you pay attention you can make sure you get into the part of town you want to get into! Check out tripadvisor.com for recommendations or feedback from people who have stayed at hotels too.
The beauty of girls traveling together.... 2 of them can share a bed, no questions asked. Guys? We gotta go through a whole lot of pain and anguish before we decide to share a bed together....and then we usually gotta do "one on top of the sheet/one under the sheet" to make sure nothing touches in the middle of the night! lol

There were 5 of us when we went to NYC and we stayed at the Hilton Embassy Suites.
It was one of the most comfortable hotels there.
There were 2 double beds, and i HUGE sofa, which can be turned into a queen sized bed :)

there's a book called Lonely Planet (NYC)
it is a really really helpful book for tourists like us because it includes walking tours, etc, and places to eat.
by the way, instead of waiting for hours in line to get to the statue of liberty, you may opt to have the NY waterway tour instead. This way, you will save enough time to tour other parts of the city :)
