Simple answer: YES.
I just got stung yesterday morning by one! It quite badly for about 30 seconds, then the pain was gone and it only hurt when touched. It still itches though...
Queen and worker bumblebees can sting, but, like virtually all bees, the sting is not barbed (only honey bees have a barbed sting), so they can sting more than once. Bumblebee species are non-aggressive, but will sting in defense of their nest, or if harmed.
The reason they are called Bumble Bees is because of their unusually loud buzzing sounds.
One common, yet incorrect, assumption is that the buzzing sound of bees is caused by the beating of their wings. The sound is the result of the bee vibrating its flight muscles, and this can be done while the muscles are decoupled from the wings, a feature known in bees but not possessed by other insects. This is especially pronounced in bumblebees, as they must warm up their bodies considerably to get airborne at low ambient temperatures. This is how bumblebees can sometimes reach an internal thoracic temperature of 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit).

They probably can't tell the difference since they are similar in appearance. However, there is one big difference - bumblebees can sting more than once (but only the queen and workers bees). If your friends ended up with a barbed stinger in them, then it was a honey bee as they are the only bees that have a barbed stinger.

The big black ones could be carpenter bees, They make holes in trees and wood and are considered pests.
Neither bumble bees ore carpenter bees are very aggessive but they can sting.

Yes, but they are much harder to provoke. Other bees can sting a lot quicker. The buzzing gives their name I believe.

Female bumble bees can sting, but they are reluctant to use thier stingers, so that's why you don't see them. Males can not sting.
