Where did the superstition start about bananas bringing bad luck on fishing boats?

it is because the smell left on your hands then transfered to the bait. Bananas have an oil resin that repell fish. and will cover the smell of most baits.

I heard this superstition probably 30yrs ago. I think it was intended to keep the banana peels from ending up on the deck where someone could slip. As for bad luck? I can say that we limited out today on halibut and I had a banana for breakfast and lunch. I tend to look for the obvious things of why I might not be catching fish. But who knows, strange things have been known to happen. 40yr exp

Its more like an excuse for slow fishing days, but I STRONGLY believe that bananas are bad luck. Many of the open party boat owners I know will NOT leave dock if a banana is onboard.
Also, there is a myth that when a ship sinks only a banana survives the tremendous pull of the sinking ship.
