Painting in College?

If you take painting in college, what is the class like basically? Do you walk in and the prof. says, "hey, paint this" or do you just get to do your own thing? Are techniques taught on a level worth paying all that tuition or is it better just to learn from a book? What are the pros? cons?

What is your current skill/experience? A basic painting class can give you techniques and processes. After that the question is what do you want to do in life? If it requires a degree the get one...otherwise get with you community art league and participate to the fullest...hanging shows, sitting the gallery, doing publicity, showing your work and taking seminars to improve on your basic skills.

Painting in college is a waste of time and money. Look for Ateliers in your area, that's where the real painters teach. Never from a book.
