How large are the bugs? It is really hard to notice mites or lice unless you are looking for them so they may be something else. There are some bugs that eat the rat's food that look ovalish and they are brown and they are about half the size of the head of a pin, if that makes sense. Check your rats food, if you have lab blocks you may find some holes where bugs have burrowed in.
It is normal for rats to groom a lot and sometimes it seems like they are itchy but they are just having normal scratches. Even so, you may want to treat her for parasites just in case, it doesn't hurt her if she doesn't have any. Pick up some Advantage from your vet's office, just one tube of the puppy / kitten kind and apply 0.1cc's to the skin at the back of her neck, then again in two weeks. Clean out the cage really well during this time and freeze all bedding for 3 days before use to prevent reinfection. If she has parasites you will be able to see them on her, they appear as TINY red dots or sometimes you can see the eggs which are little white blobs along the hair.
Hope this helps, good luck!

If they have wings and can fly around, don`t be too worried.
They are the same insects that hang around trash cans and
things like that. Clean out the cage. I clean out my guinea pigs
cage often but if those little insects show up, It reminds me.
The "bugs" that hang around, I get the shop vac out and get them that way as they are`nt very good flyers. Suck `em in when they are landed. LOL, I was just having some fun. If they are flying, they are tiny flies that haven`t fully matured yet.
Mites are A LOT smaller than a flea. If you go to touch one of them, how does it react ? Of course, a flea will jump but a mite will crawl. Let us know.

I foregot what there called but they are after the rats food I used to get them in my rabbits food bag b4 I started to put it in the freezer, clean the rats cage and move her, him to a different spot and if possible bleache the area where the rat was to rid of the bug then move the cage back to the origanal spot after it airs out some...

Sounds like mites..my rat has them right now, too. You need to call the vet, get her on medication and bleach her cage out. Use 1 cup of bleach for every 10 cups of water and rinse it well. Otherwise, she will end up cutting herself by scratching and become anemic!! Good luck...I know it's a pain, but worth it.

It sounds like she has mites or fleas. Most pet shops will stock treatment for this which one applies regularly as a preventative. If she has no open wounds then disinfect the cage, get rid of her bedding (or wash it well) and clean the area around the cage. Get a flea and mite treatment for her. If she has any open wounds though, or has started losing her fur you will need to take her to the vet. She might need antibiotics.

what you need to do is clean out the cage and disinfect it, while you do that put the rats in a different room and spray the bugs with insect killer spray, then wait until the room has stopped smelling and put the rats back in. If they come back, repeat until all the bugs are dead.
I used to have rats :)

Fleas or lice. He needs to be treated....they are probably driving him nuts. They bite and they eventually will infest your house and start biting you and your family. Contact a vet and find out what you can do for him.
