Start looking up the foundation stallions & their show records. Then you look up the the type you like. Because there are the halter type quarter horse & the cow working type & racing type. That is why you look into what type you like then research those lines. Then you just keep looking up the names of each stud. Then you'll learn what bloodlines you want to know about more. You already got some good web sites. Myself I like to keep the foundation bloodlines on my Morgans. I like the old type horses better! So that is why I look into foundation blood. Here are a few quarter horses that are foundation stallions:
Anything Hancock
Driftwood 1932-1960 153 registered foals-153
Rocket Bar 1951-1970 Reg foals- 454
Wimpy 1937-1959 reg foal-174
Jet Deck 1960-1971 reg foals-580
Poco Pine 1954-1974 reg foals-464
Cutter Bill 1955-1982 reg foals-637
Pretty Buck 1942-1970 reg foals- 274

It depends on what type of bloodlines you want to focus on. Each "event" has a different group of bloodlines that are popular. If you want to learn about some of the foundation sires for all the basic events, you could buy the Legends books. I think there are 8 or 9 now, and each book tells about 20 or so different, famous QH's.
Otherwise, you can pick the event you're interested in (reining, western pleasure, halter, hunter under saddle - those are probably the most popular) and look up the All-Time Point Producing Stallion's lists. It will tell you which AQHA studs have produced the most winning babies in those events. THe AQHA journal publishes those lists, so they might also have it on their website (www.aqha.com)
Hope this helps!

I would purchase the "Legends" series published by Western Horseman. Read them, they are wonderful books. They give an overview of the breed history and have pictures and histories of outstanding quarterhorses since the 40's I believe. Everyone has a different bloodline preference, but all of todays QH's go back to these foundation animals. It is a great place to start.

normally it just depends on what you wish to do with a horse.
if you want a reining horse the link is the best.
those are horses who have earned more then a million dollars in reining! [almost all of which are either paint or quarter horse!]
another great way to find more info on some are going to your nearest store where they sell horse stuff. including books.
there are a series of books that have leading AQHA and APHA sires.
you can just look at all the names in the store, but i would recommend buying the books. they're fun to read!

Quarter horse news helped me a lot. But thats mostly cow breed horses. You have doc bar, peppy san badger, smart little lena, playgun, colonel freckles, peptoboonsmal, high brow cat. Reining is gunner, hollywood dun it, smart enterprise, like a diamond. Roping is names like hancock, driftwood, blue valintine. Barrel racing is dash for cash, go man go, easy jet? Hope thes get you somewhat started. Just look up the names and see who done and produced what!!

The best source of Information is the National Quarter Horse Associations website
However you do have to pay for this.
This is also a great website that gives a lot of information on the breed in general, along with pedigrees/bloodlines.
And this is the best source of free pedigree information I have ever found.
