how much starter solids should 6.5mo baby be eating?

my baby is exclusively breastfed. we started on mushed solids 2wks ago. how often and how much per feeding should she be eating? right now, she takes slightly more than a tablespoonful of mashed solids twice or thrice a day (always after nursing)

but then, since solids are harder to digest, i find that she's also nursing less often. there's often a four hour interval before she'd want to nurse again. i'm worried about her nutrition since starter solids like mashed potato, yam, carrots, peas don't have that much in them. What do i do about the nutrition? (although she does "make up" for the nutritional intake at night. she's nursing more often compared to last month)

The amount a baby will eat will vary. The most important thing is that you are not trying to make solids the main source of calories and nutrition yet. A small amount 2 or 3 times per day sounds appropriate and if she is nursing more at night, she is getting what she needs. At 7 months , mine is eating solids 2 times per day and is eating an ice cude size portion each time.

One or two tablespoons 2-3 times a day is enough at that age.

You could try offering her a bit of a breastfeed (i.e. from one side) before giving her the solids or you could try mixing some expressed breastmilk in with the food to add a bit of extra nutrition content. Just make sure you heat the food first before adding the milk (heating breastmilk kills off a lot of the nutrition).

You can also give cooked fruit (apples and pears are good), yoghurt (full fat, plain), banana, avocado, and cottage cheese at this age.

At 6 months we started our daughter on normal table foods -- no mush, no jars or packet foods -- just what we were eating put in front of her.

She's 7 months now and eats great -- she self feeds so we know she is getting exactly how much she needs, it's up to her how much she eats.

Generally she'll have some fruit for breakfast, vegetables (broccoli, green beans, red pepper) for lunch -- then eat with us for dinner -- lasagna, ratatouille... whatever.

We don't mash or puree anything for her -- she is very capable of picking food up and gnawing away.

She still breastfeeds on demand, so she is getting most of her nutrition from my milk.

I really recommend self feeding --

You are doing great. Try not to worry about how much she takes in in terms of solids. Remember this early on, it is just for practice.
